If you’ve seen any of our client photos after a Gotox laser treatment, you’ve seen how aging lines and skin sagging can be seemingly reversed. We want to explain how this happens and why it’s important.

To start, you must understand that healthy, youthful skin depends on two essential proteins: collagen and elastin. Think of them as your skin’s internal support system, like a tightly woven checkerboard beneath the surface that keeps skin firm, smooth, and resilient.

What is collagen and elastin?

Collagen gives your skin structure and strength, while elastin allows it to stretch and snap back into place. When you’re younger, these fibers are dense, organized, and strong. Over time, however, that support network begins to weaken. The tight crosshatched pattern starts to break apart, collagen fibers become thinner, and elastin loses its elasticity. That’s when skin begins to show more fine lines, laxity, and a loss of lift.

Why does collagen break down?

Age

Collagen is constantly being made and broken down by your body. When you are younger, production happens quickly, so your skin easily repairs itself and maintains firmness and elasticity. But beginning in your mid-20s, your body gradually starts producing less new collagen each year, about 1% less annually. At the same time, existing collagen fibers begin to weaken and become less organized.

This early slowdown happens because the skin’s natural repair processes become less efficient with age. Fibroblasts, which are the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin, begin to work more slowly. Hormonal changes, even subtle ones, also influence how well your skin maintains itself.

Our Aestheticians at Gotox say this often: Don’t wait to start caring about your skin! Many of the choices made in your 20s and 30s strongly affect how skin looks in your 40s and beyond.

Sun exposure

Sun exposure is one of the biggest reasons collagen breaks down faster because ultraviolet (UV) rays activate enzymes called matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), which damage collagen and elastin deep within the skin.

These enzymes begin breaking apart healthy collagen fibers, essentially cutting through the skin’s support structure. At the same time, sun exposure slows the skin’s ability to create new collagen, meaning your skin is losing collagen faster than it can replace it.

Over time, this leads to wrinkles, uneven texture, and loss of firmness.

Diet

Diet also plays an important role. One of the biggest dietary contributors to collagen loss is excess sugar. When sugar levels are consistently high, a process called glycation occurs. Glycation happens when sugar molecules attach to collagen and elastin fibers, making them stiff, weak, and less flexible. Over time, this weakens the skin’s support structure and contributes to fine lines, dullness, and loss of firmness.

On the other hand, certain nutrients help support collagen production naturally. Your body needs protein, vitamin C, zinc, and antioxidants to build and protect collagen fibers.

Other Factors

Smoking, dehydration, chronic stress, poor sleep, and environmental exposure can all accelerate visible skin aging as well.

Can collagen loss be reversed?

What products help tighten skin?

The encouraging news is that while collagen loss is natural, there are ways to support and stimulate new collagen production. Daily sunscreen, medical-grade skincare, retinoids, antioxidants like vitamin C, and professional aesthetic treatments can all help protect and strengthen your skin over time. Certain in-office treatments are designed specifically to encourage your skin to rebuild collagen, improve elasticity, and restore a firmer, more refreshed appearance.

A few brands stand above the others. We fully endorse and sell the following brands: Gotox product line, Skinbetter Science, Neocutis, Colorescience. Be sure to stop into our office to grab a Colorescience 50spf sunscreen foundation or products like; Gotox retinol, Go-Bright vitamin C, Go-Hydrate Hyaluronic Acid serum, collagen-building Go-Renew, Go-Firm wrinkle-reducer, Go-Green facial-balancing serum, Go-Tight deep nourishment, or Go-Rich moisturizer.

At Gotox Aesthetics, serving Wyandotte and St. Clair Shores, we believe skin aging should be understood — not feared. Loss of collagen and elastin does not mean you are out of options.
